![]() ![]() ![]() The trouble was that the life of a scientist had nothing to do with what she’d always loved about exploration – the sense of living outside the lines, breaking away from the familiar and stepping ever into the unknown. And so Kate threw herself with abandon into this goal, racking up academic honors and science degrees from the University of North Carolina and Oxford, and enrolled in a PhD program at MIT, the institution that has produced more astronauts than any other.Īnd she was miserable. As a bookish yet fiercely adventurous child, Kate grew up with her nose buried in the stories of Shackleton, Nansen or Marco Polo….and dreaming of Mars, the frontier her generation of explorers – astronauts – might realistically one day reach. From an early age, Kate Harris dreamed of being an explorer the trouble was she was born a century too late. ![]()
